Information Technology Careers Overview

Because computers have become such an integral part of everyday life, IT careers have become more common. Computer programmers, support specialists and systems analysts are just a few typical information technology careers. Programmers are the translators who convert software developers' designs into codes that computers understand. Support specialists are the ambassadors who help ordinary people when they encounter problems with their computers. Systems analysts work with businesses to ensure that the companies' computers and networks are working efficiently.

Information Technology Education

IT jobs such as programmers and analysts, usually require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related area, but sometimes an associate's degree will suffice. Experience is always a plus, too, and can be gained through school as well as on the job. Not all computer support specialist jobs require extensive postsecondary education or a degree, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). You may find that different companies look for a bachelor's or associate's degree, while others value experience and computer skills enough to land you the job.

Information Technology Job Market

IT careers are expected to increase in demand as individuals and companies continue to use computers more and more. In the 10 year period between 2010 and 2020, programmer jobs are expected to increase 28.8 percent and systems analysts and support specialists will grow by 43.1 percent. Considering those three IT careers alone employed over 350,000 in 2010, the projected growth means an abundance of jobs for computer-savvy job seekers.

Information Technology Salaries

It pays to pursue information technology careers. The median annual salary for computer support specialists is $48,900, although if you choose to specialize in network support that average goes up by over $10,000 per year to $59,090, according to the BLS. Programmers and systems analysts fare a little better at $74,280 and $79,680, respectively.
